Week 5 Term 2

This week we went on our first Room 11 outing of the year. On Tuesday morning, along with a number of parents, we walked to the Suter Art Gallery to look at the Rita Angus exhibition. We studied a variety of portraits and performed a mihi for some of them.
Then we looked at how she used colour to represent shadows, focusing especially on the dove in this picture.

We then drew our own doves making the chalk pastels whisper, talk and shout to create areas of different shading.

We have continued making shredded paper to sell as pet bedding as part of out Zero Waste inquiry topic. We have designed posters to let people know when and where to buy the bags of bedding and how much they cost. The bedding will be on sale as from Monday

On Thursday Thomas's mum came in with her bokashi to explain how we could recycle our food scraps into compost and plant food. We have started up our own Room 11 bokashi and hope to be collecting bokashi juice soon.

Our poem this week also helped us think about a zero waste classroom. It was quite long to learn but we used our  'I can' attitudes and managed to record 2 verses to share with you.

Finally on Friday we ended the week with our Room 5 buddies who taught us how to play Fruit Salad. Tracy was a rather slow banana!!

Week 4 Term 2

This week Talia has led a series of Te Reo Maori lessons to teach us how to say our mihi. Next week we will be recording them to go on our blogs along with our self portraits.

In our Zero Waste inquiry we have been using our knowledge to think of enterprising ways to reduced our classroom waste. Here we are shredding our used paper. We found out from our home surveys that some of our families reuse their shredded paper for pet bedding.
We filled a carrier bag with shredded paper and decided to sell it for 50c so that we were no more expensive than the paper sold at the pet shop.
Talia was our first customer, she bought the bedding for her chickens. We are going to use the money we raise to buy more playtime equipment from the $2 shop. We can buy one ball for every 4 bags we sell. Keep a look out for the bedding on sale before school outside Room 11 this week.

In art most of us have finished colouring in our leaves with warm colours. There is a lot of detail to add and our hands keep getting tired so some leaves are still taking shape. Come and look at the finished ones on our classroom wall along with our Autumn descriptions.

On Tuesday it was International Families Day, check out our paintings of our families on the kidzstuff blog

Our poem  this week was all about the kiwi bird and next week we will be writing a description to go with this.

A big thank you to Will, Oliver and Thomas for bringing your mum's along to share their fun science with us.
Our literacy focus this week looked at all our fabulous mum's. First of all we wrote descriptions of our mums and published them in ICT.
Then we published and recorded a poem about our mums.

I hope that all our Room 11 mums had the wonderful Mother's Day they deserved.

Week 2 Term 2

Take a look at the obstacle course our Room 5 buddies made for us. We love the way you encouraged and supported us in this challenge, thank you Room 5

On Wednesday this week we visited the York Landfill and the Reuse and Recycle Shop. It was a very interesting trip for both children and adults and we are all very excited about our new classroom mat that Tracy bought. Here is what Thomas thought of the trip:
Room 11 went to the dump. it was smelly. I had to hold my nose it was so smelly.
This term we are looking at Maori myths and legends. The first legend we have learnt about is Maui and the Big Fish. Watch this movie whilst your child retells the legend for you.
Our art and literacy had an Autumn feel to it this week. We went on an Autumn walk and then wrote descriptions. This is what Alfie wrote:
Autumn is about when leaves fall from trees and I like the warm sun.
Later in the week we concentrated very hard whilst making observational drawing of the leaves we collected.

Our poem also had an Autumn theme...have a listen.
