Week 8 Term 1

Our week began with a theatrical rendition of the Jabberwocky written by Lewis Carroll and performed by our classroom cleaner.Other book month story times were led by Connor's mum, Alfie's mum and one of our caretakers. Week 9 is the last week of book month so come along and share your favourite children's story with us.

On Friday we had a special book sharing session with our Room 5 buddies. Take a look at who our buddies are and what fun we had reading to each other.

In our digital photography we tried  taking photos from below the subject using a possum eye's view.
Our poem last week was called 'Orange Octopus" and linked to our sounds work on the letter 'o'.

Week 7 Term 1

In ICT this week we explored online games about healthy eating. You can play them at home by clicking on the Healthy Eating tab at the top of our blog, your child will be able to show you how to get to the games.

We had our first 2 guest readers come in on Wednesday and Thursday. Thanks for the lovely stories and for helping us to celebrate NZ Book Month. Next week we have more guest readers including some dads, our cleaner and our caretaker. It is not too late to sign up for a story telling slot, so be brave and have a go.
The story telling was a big hit with everyone in Room 11 plus some younger friends as well.
In literacy we wrote about our cat pictures. Come and read our stories on the classroom wall.
In art we added blocks of primary colours to our black wiggles that we painted last week. Next week we will be adding the finishing touches by putting texture on the painting.

On Thursday we had a special visitor, Mikey, he was very excited to be in Room 11 and even more excited about going for a  walk afterwards. We learnt lots of facts about him and made a big list of words we could use when we write a story about his visit next week. Mikey's visit helped us to remember the sounds 'd' and 'm' which we were learning.

We continued our work on digital photography by learning how to take head shots of each other from a short distance and at eye-level .

On Friday we made a card for Jessabell who has moved house and will be going to a different school. This is our special message to you Jessabell.

Our poem this week was Hey Diddle Diddle. See how many 'd' and 'm' sounds you can hear in this clip.

Week 6 Term 1

On Monday Grove Street Kindy came for a visit to see what it is like at big school. We taught them lots of maths games including 1-10 bingo.
We finished our manadala that we were making to help us think about the children in Nepal that we raised money for on Purple Cake Day. It also helped us to realise how we can achieve much more when we work as a team.
We started our unit on digital photography with the help of Katarina, a visiting German teacher. Our first task was to take a photo of a friend from a middle distance, using a bird's eye view. We will be evaluating our results next week before taking close up portrait shots of our friends.
This month is NZ Book Month and every child will be receiving a $5 book voucher. We will be doing a number of activities to celebrate this including a book character dress up day on Friday 30th March and inviting parents and whanau to read an end of day story to us..look out for the sign up list on our notice board. In ICT we made our own book marks using this program from National Geographic http://www.nationalgeographic.com/bookmarkfactory/
In maths we have continued to look at patterns within 5, pop into class and see all the different ways we found of making 5 on our hands.
We also worked on our knowledge of backward number sequencing, counting back from 10 and from 20. We made rockets to show our learning ......
......and had great fun each day practicing with this counting down from 20 song.

Just incase it sounds like it was all work and no play in Room 11 last week take a look at this racing car creation produced during the lunch break.

Finally here is the poem from last week. It helped us to learn about words that rhymed with 'wall' and focused on the 'h' sound.

Week 5 Term 1

Luckily the weather was good to us last Monday and many of our families came along to the School Community Group Annual Picnic. Great fun was had by all and I was particularly impressed with the Room 11 boys effort in the Tug of War event.

Also on Monday last week we welcomed a new addition to our class, we named him Flopsy and he makes a very comfy addition to our reading corner.
Our Class Treaty is now on our window for everyone to see and to remind us daily of the promises we made to each other to ensure we have a happy learning space in Room 11. Please take the time to share it with your child and familiarise yourself with the rights and responsibilities it covers.
On Thursday we celebrated Purple Cake Day, raising over $500 across the whole of NCS for schools in Nepal and Haiti. Thank you to everyone who contributed and please enjoy the spectacular sight of all our purple clad Room 11 friends.

Our poem for last week also had a purple theme and I know has already been enjoyed by many families who shared poem books that came home at the weekend. If you have not already heard it take a listen to " My Neighbours Dog is Purple"

Finally great news, our blogs can now be accessed through the Nelson Central home page at http://www.nelsoncentral.school.nz/ just click on the links on the left hand side.
