We are a Year 1 class at Nelson Central School, Nelson, New Zealand. Most of us are 5 years old,
except for Tracy our teacher who is a bit older. This blog lets you know what we have been up to
and what our next learning steps will be. We love to find out what people think about our class
so please get typing and leave us a comment.

Week 1 Term 2

We began the first week of Term 2 by remembering all the soldiers who have fought to keep our country safe. We made our own Room 11 poppy wreath and laid it with the otherwreaths and crosses from Nelson Central classes. We learnt more about ANZAC day in assembly and listened to the Last Post being played. Did you see us on the front page of the Nelson Mail?

We welcomed Talia, our student teacher into our Room 11 family and she has made a great hit with us all already.
On Tuesday we had a special hockey skills lesson with Aaron. We learnt lots and as you can see from the photo movie below there is definitely some budding hockey talent in Room 11. A flier was sent home with information about out of school hockey lessons. If you did not get this there are still a few in class.
In art we finished off our flower pictures showing our learning about primary, secondary and complimentary colours. Look out for them on display in the classroom and on our Kidzstuff blog.
In our writing lessons we began learning about descriptions by describing an animal or pet. First of all we did a shared description of Jasper. As he was not able to come to school on Tracy's bike he made us a little movie so we could learn more about him.
Our poem this week also had a cat theme.
We made a start on our Zero Waste Classroom inquiry topic by setting the scene and recording what we already know about waste.

Then we looked at all the waste we had collected in one day in Room 11. Next week we will start thinking what we can do to reduce this even more.

Week 10 Term 1

On Tuesday of the last week of term we enjoyed a Kowhai shared kai to celebrate our learning during our "Eating For Health" inquiry topic. We were all very impressed with the healthy efforts made by the children and their families. We certainly  had our 5 servings of fruit and vegetables that day.

Our last parent story teller read the much loved book 'Herbert The Sea Dog" to us this week. We so much enjoyed having parents sharing stories with us that Tracy is going to look at continuing this activity in Term 2. Watch out for the new sign up list.
On Wednesday we noticed the mysterious appearance of penguins around the school. No one knows where they came from but they had also been spotted on Walter's Bluff. Maybe some of you would like to write a story about the penguins over the holiday and share it with your Room 11 friends when we meet in Term 2.
On Thursday we had a special treat from our buddy class. Some of them had written, directed and produced their own play which they performed for us. Another group had recorded a very entertaining song and dance routine for us to watch. Well done Room 5, you are all so talented.
Our final poem of the term has an Easter feel to it. See how many rhyming words you can hear.

Week 9 , Term 1

In week 9 we had a special visit from some of our Montessori friends and teachers. We sang a dinosaur song, had a dinosaur story and made dinosaur pictograms. Thanks for coming to visit us.
Our NZ Book Month activities continued with more story times from parents, school staff and even student teachers.

On Friday the whole school dressed up as a book character. See how many characters you know in this clip.

Our maths focus for this week was statistics and pictograms. Come and have a look at the pictograms on the classroom wall.
In ICT we used Tuxpaint to reproduce our wiggle pictures that we had painted in art. Watch out for both bits of art work on the Kidzstuff blog later this week.
In week 8 we had used Tuxpaint to make a poster reminding us to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Something to remember when preparing food for our Kowhai shared healthy kai on Tuesday
Our poem also reminded us of how important fruit and vegetables are.
On Thursday Thomas brought in an interesting seed that looked like half a spinning sycamore seed. This resulted in us making our own paper helicopter spinners and seeing how they flew. Afterwards we wrote about our helicopters. Unfortunately the video clips below are a bit blurry but it gives you an idea of what we got up to.
